Tearful Goodbye

Last night was the series finale of The Office. And It was a beautiful goodbye.

It had everything you could want from a finale. Happy endings, reunions with old friends (wink, wink), and a look back at the years past. In this case, the 9 years The Office spent on the air.

I realized something last night. More episodes of this show have brought me to tears than any other series on television. In fact it’s probably brought more tears from me than my own life has.

But that’s what happens when something sweet and beautiful touches your heart. Even if that thing is just a little television show about a bunch of office workers’ loves, lives and losses.

The stories of Michael, Jim, Pam, Dwight, Oscar, Angela, Kevin, Creed, Meredith, Ryan, Kelly, Darryl, Phyllis, Stanley, Andy and Erin had their highs and lows. But at the heart, it was great story telling and I will miss tuning in on Thursday nights.

I couldn’t envision a more fitting goodbye. So well done writers, cast and crew of The Office. And thank you for keeping this nerd in tears!

Star Trek Into Darkness

Warning: This post contains spoilers.

Star Trek Into Darkness is an amazing follow up to J.J. Abram’s 2009 Star Trek.

It has everything you want and expect from something holding the illustrious title of Star Trek. But at the same time… this ain’t your daddy’s Trek. It’s updated and modern in all the right ways with plenty of nods to the past we know and love.

I mean… there was a freaking Tribble. And Khan, the baddest of the baddies in the Star Trek universe. But the twists and turns that Abrams allows his updated franchise to take only help the story.

image

image

Adding to that are very strong performances from Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and most especially Benedict Cumberbatch from the BBC’s Sherlock.

image

It was long rumored that Cumberbatch would be playing the role of Khan, but rumor was deflected with the release of his character’s name, John Harrison. But have no fear… John is a smoke screen and Khan is very real, present and dangerous!

The music is stirring, the visuals are stunning and seeing the USS-Enterprise up on the big screen again never gets old!

J.J. Abrams keeps on delivering gold. The only question remains is if he will be continuing on with Star Trek in light of his helming the Star Wars behemoth. One can only hope that he can manage them both. Because while Star Wars is in very good hands (and that warms my heart,) Star Trek could suffer from his absence. And that would be a shame!

All in all… go see it. If you’re a fan on the originals or just like a thrilling action film, it has something for everyone and is wildly entertaining!!

Death of the Midnight Showing

It used to be that when a big blockbuster came out, if you were truly devoted, you’d go to the midnight showing. People would dress up and wait in line for hours. It always felt like a mini-con to me.

But recently, theaters have been opening their doors earlier and earlier. For example: last night I went to see Iron Man 3 at 10:30. And that wasn’t even the first showing of the night. It felt wrong somehow, seeing it before midnight. But the whole point of a midnight showing is to see the movie first. So essentially the 9 o’clock showing is the new midnight showing. Except that the 10:30 was barely packed and it just wasn’t the same.  I mean, there were maybe 30+ people in the theater all together. I long for a packed house. And an entire theater of like-minded nerds. All reacting together to what’s happening on the screen, like a glorious tidal wave moving as one.

In the future it will only be the midnight showing for me. Regardless of whether I see it first or not. I just wouldn’t have it any other way.

In other news, Iron Man 3 was highly enjoyable and a great addition to not only the Iron Man collection, but the whole Marvel universe!! Go see it!

I Love Legos

Legos are not just for kids!! Maybe they never were. I love when a kid says with enthusiasm and joy, “will you play Legos with me?” Duh, kid!! Of course I will.

Read This: Plague Town & Plague Nation

If you enjoy zombie fiction, then you will like this series by Dana Fredsti. Starting with Plague Town.

image

Essentially, the zombocalypse (Ashley Parker’s moniker for the zombie epidemic) has struck, unbeknownst to the population of, Redwood Grove.Ashley Parker and her boyfriend Matt are attacked and instead of turning into a zombie, Ashley finds herself flung into a group of people known as ‘wild-cards.’ (Boyfriend Matt isn’t so lucky.) A group of people who, once bitten, have an immunity to the virus and what’s more, develop certain super powers making them the perfect zombie fighting unit.

Ashley is equal parts, katana-swinging, bad-ass and angsty, girlie girl. Thanks to an attraction to her team leader and captain, Gabriel.

image

Plague Nation picks up where Town leaves off. The virus has spread thanks to a well intentioned flu vaccine. And the team is forced to travel outside the small town they know and fight the undead on a larger scale.

Dana Fredsti pays homage to most prexisting zombie lore. Including  many references to The Walking Dead. Even so, she manages to make her own rules and yet stay true to what we already know of zombies. Things like taking out a zombie’s brain and the call of a zombie attracting other zombies, are present. She uses twists like the ‘wild-cards ‘ to create a universe all her own.

I can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Surely You Jest

Sometimes I wonder if men are capable of making jokes without it being completely inappopriate and highly sexual.

Take Mr. “I’m-still-deciding.” So the next day, I guess he decided because he texted me. And here’s what happened.

Him – “are we fighting?”

Me – “who is this again?”

Him – “see… now you should have woken up on top of me with the windows open this morning.”

My brain – ” huh?”

Actual response – “umm… thanks but I’m just not that kind of girl.”

Him – “ugg… you took it the wrong way so clearly you are that kind of girl.”

Me – “ugg… I’m pretty sure there’s only one way to take that.” DELETE!

Men of the world! What gives. I mean, was it a joke I just didn’t get? And does it really help your cause to make me feel dumb? I’m just saying.

Humor is the way into my heart. (And eventually after a whole bunch of other stuff happens… my pants.) Always has been. And if you are truly funny and make me laugh, watch out. I may love you.
To you idiots who have no idea what a joke actually is and just uses stupid “jokes” about waking up in bed with me? Then “I’m not that kinda girl.” And you are a giant ass.

Just saying.

Don’t Even Bother

A couple weeks ago, Grace Kelle and I were out as usual. And we met these 2 guys. The one I ended up talking to was funny and nice and cute so I gave him my number.

At the end of the night he (of course) invited me home with him. Promising all kinds of “fun.” I immediately regretted giving him my #, but what’s done was done. When we parted, he said he wasn’t sure he was gonna call.
Which is a weird thing to say to a girl whose pants you want to get into. When I got home, this is the text that awaited…
“I’m still deciding…”

Yuk!!! After receiving that I wrote back,
“If you have to think about it then you can go ahead and forget my number.”

And my question is… why even bother? Don’t take my number. If all you want is sex and I clearly am not giving into that, then why show any interest beyond that?
Just move on to the next pair of breats and save me the trouble of deleting you… you idiot!!

What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

Have you ever had a job that was hell? But you stayed longer than you should have? And when you left you sort of felt like you’d finally gotten out of a really terrible war?

If you know me, then you know the job I’m talking about. If  you don’t… then ask me about it sometime and I’ll tell you some stories.

That being said, I had a reunion with some of the girls I worked with at this hellish place. And it felt exactly like a bunch of war veterans getting together and reliving old war stories.

People who’ve never worked there have no clue. And people who actually  like it are in a bit of denial or just plain can’t escape. Sort of like prisoners of war.

I have to stay that these survivors, friends, comrades know me in a way that most others just don’t know. It’s not their fault. They can’t know… they weren’t there. They didn’t experience the horrors of war. And therefore they just don’t know.

Some of these women I haven’t seen in years, but it was like we were back in the trenches. Friends in arms.

There’s a character that is built in trying times. When your mettle is tested. And when that trial is over you go back to normal, fold yourself out of crash position and return to life as you know it.  But it’s in those tough times that you really see yourself. And being with the old gang again was a nice reminder of a part of me long forgotten.

So here’s to you, friends! And the things we saw when we were there. We made it out and no matter what happens in the aftermath we sure are stronger now!!

PS, I know war is so much worse than a well paying job!! But… you weren’t there.

Arrow

image

The CW’s Arrow is just getting better and better. The story and characters are strong. And there must be a fanboy over in casting because they have had some serious nerd royalty walk through the door.

image

Starting with John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn, father of Tommy Merlyn. Barrowman is known in nerd culture are Captain Jack Harkness from the BBC fan favorite, Dr. Who. And from his own spin-off series, Torchwood.

image

Alex Kingston recently joined the cast as Dinah Lance, mother of Dinah Laurel Lance. Also a Dr. Who alum, Kingston plays The Doctor’s on again/ off again paramour and wife, River Song.

image

Arrow even managed to procur James Callis as The Dodger in an episode. Callis is known for his role in Battlestar Gallactica as the love-to-hate-him baddie, Gaius Baltar. I cannot wait to see who else comes on the scene!

Nerdy Grooms

The groom often gets bypassed in the small details because… let’s face it… men don’t dream about their wedding day from the tender age of 5.
The nerdy groom especially, because of the nature of fancy black tie weddings. But here are some examples of grooms who have gotten to let their nerd flag fly at their wedding.
